The Fortress of Mondavio |
Powerful & striking with its mighty polygonal shaped Mastio with ten irregular sloping faces connected to the Torricino (a small guardian’s tower) at one side and the supporting semi elliptical great tower (Torrione) on the other side, both rising above the deep ditch that surrounds the fortress. It is one of the best examples of fortified architectural style of the period between the Medieval & Modern times. The unconquered fortress was a great defensive weapon for a border territory such as Mondavio, on which historical events have left very deep marks. The Fortress of Mondavio: Photo Gallery |
The Fortress was built between 1482 & 1492 commissioned by Giovanni della Rovere who was Lord of Senigallia and of the Vicarage of Mondavio. He was the son-in-law of Federico of Montefeltro. It was designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, creator of the architectural defensive system of Urbino under the Monfeltro family. The Rocca of Mondavio is considered an absolute masterpiece of the Renaissance military architecture.
